Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days, Ford decided that it was not the right venue for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she already had made her debut on television in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian that was added to her resume in 1996.
